His stage name is G.C. (Godz Chyld). He currently lives in the Bronx but is originally from Washington heights. G.C.’s main influences in music were 2pac, Bob Marley, WuTang, Nas & Jay Z. G.C. also wants to make it clear he is a fan of some of the new breed of emcees out there too. His newest project is called, “Don’t Sleep On Me”, and the whole concept was Chyld feeling like people sleeping on his music and him just straight beasting over beats and showing them he’s nothing to be slept on. This project alone boasts production from Jordan River Banks, St. Peter and Bronze Nazareth. The current project has11 tracks and is for free on bandcamp. This is the follow up to his “Forever” project with JRB last year. You can get that here- https://jordanrivers.bandcamp.com/album/godz-chyld-forever-ep
1. Whats good homie? Nice to meet you…
Peace, thanks for the opportunity and the interview.
2. Ok for starts we know you aren’t a christian rapper so how did you come up with your name (laughs)?
(Laughs) I always get that, I been into knowledge since I was young and growing up in NY there was always a lot to be learned and older dudes dropping jewels on me. I’ve never been religious and I still to this day don’t have a religion but I believe in a higher power and I believe every single thing that exists is that things child in a way even the universe itself can be considered gods child to me. It’s really just me saying I am what I am it’s not saying that I have to always be good or be a role model or none of that. I just am what I am and whatever that is is still gods child, but I abbreviated my name now to GC because I noticed that’s not something everyone can get into or understand so to make it easier. I’m just GC.
3. Ok we know you are from Washington Heights originally and now live in the BX. Even tho they are fairly close which area do you like better and why?
Of course I LOVE the heights, that’s where I grew up and feel the most comfortable and that’s still where I be at. The vibe out there is something I’m closer to, and I love being out there, every hood is still the hood but that’s home though to me.
4. After listening to you, you are a true NY emcee. Is it weird that real authentic New York sound seems to be in the minority now?
Nah I think that’s a good thing it’s forcing New York to question itself and when you put NY in a corner we gonna come out swinging. You can’t hold us down or back and we got so much style out here, and we innovators, so it’s only a matter of time till we create something that’s gonna have people back on us like at first. There’s a couple artists already doing that, look at Joey Bada$$, Asap Rocky, Action Bronson all these dudes is official and make good music & they all coming outta NY so people already recognizing.
5. Lets talk you as an artist. Where do you want to go next artistically and conceptually with the next project? We know now that you had a chip on your shoulder and wanted to show the haters what time it is on this new joint. What’s next?
I’m trying to be more creative and get outta my box more that’s my goal every project. I don’t wanna get used to making the same sound, I wanna switch stuff up and try myself. For real I wanna be in a position where I’m able to make some real different creative stuff, right now I gotta work with what I can because I’m doing everything on my own but with some sort of support & backing I can do a lot more & really show people what I’m capable of. I’m like a lion in a cage but as soon as someone opens that cage it’s gonna be a problem. So my next project you can expect to be way crazier more out the box and always different form the last because I hate sounding the same.
6. Lets talk current events.. what’s the deal with this Suge Knight case? Any predictions?
I only heard a couple things about it, supposedly he ran somebody over and he been getting sick in jail after going to court and all that, he look like he in a bad place right now. I don’t know the dude so I can’t really say much but I don’t wish jail on anybody. I don’t really know man, that’s a crazy situation.
7. Ok back to the boom bap. It seems like you have a good chemistry with Jordan River Banks. How did you guys first link up?
Yea we crazy together in my opinion, he’s a crazy producer, we linked up through sound cloud I was feeling his beats and I’d heard his stuff before through Killah Priest songs. I hit him up and told him his stuff was official & he checked my stuff out and said lets work on a track or two. Well that turned into a whole project and we got cool, he’s a real cool dude and a great producer, so we made a crazy EP & a lot of people felt it. That was a great experience for me
8. Your new project “Dont Sleep On Me” is like you have something to prove. What was it that inspired the title and feel of this record?
People sleeping on me man, I’ve always felt that way and that’s what fuels my energy in my songs is like I always feel like I have something to prove. When I heard that beat I knew it was the perfect beat and opportunity to air that out. I just felt like spazzing on it and showing people that I’m fuckin ill and you bugging if you not fuckin wit it! (LAUGHS) On the real ii got a chip on my shoulder and its only making me better as an artist the more you sleep on me the ruder the awakening gonna be, I’m ill!

9. Are you looking for a major deal or to blow up Indy?
Either one really, I don’t care about either, I just care about having a good audience and having a voice. If a major can get me more exposure to reach the people, I’ll take it. If I can do it on my own its all good too for me it’s about reaching the people, a major seems like it can get you way more exposure and a bigger audience and I feel like it would put me in a position where i can learn more about the business and music, being around people who have accomplished so much. I see it more as a learning experience than anything, I’m always hungry for knowledge & trying to pick intelligent people’s brains.
10. What’s a typical day like for G.C.?
A typical day for me is going to work, real talk, I gotta get that bread, that’s a typical day for me. a great day for me is when I can go work on music that’s when I’m at my happiest and feeling great when I can get in the booth because I’m naturally a creative. Nothing makes me feel better than getting creative & trying new things
11. You got a lot of crazy records on this project. One of our faves is “If Not”. It had that out on the park have a cypher type of feel to it. How did that track come about?
Yo I been got that beat from Bronze Nazareth a while ago but i put it to the side because I started working on my Forever EP at that time so I revisited it and was like I gotta use this, so I told my group member i wanted to make it a group song because it had that kinda feel. I felt like it would be wack just by myself so we was just brainstorming and I put my verse down and he put his, then we was like it’ll be ill if we do something different for the 3rd verse to keep things interesting and keep it from getting boring. That’s where we came in with the idea that the beginning of his verse would be the end of mine, it came out ill and we kept it like that.
12. Any plans for a video for it?
I didn’t even think of that but that’s an ill idea. We were definitely planning on performing that song though we feel like it has a vibe that will get people hype that’s definitely a hard track so its deserving of a video.
It was great being able to pick your brain and we look forward to hearing more. Give us some links where the MTK readers can check you out..
