A viral freestyle turned into a mixtape you can't find on Spotify. Meanwhile, Benny The Butcher's about to share a stage with Nas and The Roots. Griselda isn't knocking on the door anymore.
Conway The Machine didn’t announce a mixtape. He posted a freestyle called “FREE” and let the internet do the rest.

By the time the clip had made its way through timelines, Conway had what most artists spend months building toward, real, unforced momentum. Instead of turning it into a single or an album rollout, he did something closer to what the genre used to run on entirely: he made a tape. Fifteen tracks, hosted start to finish by DJ Whoo Kid, called I Heard You Paint Houses.
You will not find it on streaming. It’s not on Spotify, not on Apple Music. Conway put it out through Laylo, a direct-to-fan platform, text a number, get the tape. That’s not a workaround, it’s the point. It’s the same instinct that built mixtape culture in the first place: go around the gatekeepers, hand the music straight to the people who want it.
DJ Whoo Kid hosting it isn’t incidental either. This is the same guy who ran G-Unit Radio for 50 Cent two decades ago, one of the most recognizable voices in the mixtape era this whole archive is built around. Him showing up on a 2026 tape, still doing the exact same job, is proof the format never actually died. It just moved.

This Isn’t Happening in a Vacuum
Conway’s tape lands right as Griselda, the Buffalo label he co-founded with Westside Gunn and Benny The Butcher, is having its biggest crossover moment yet.
Benny The Butcher is headlining Roots Picnic London on August 8th and 9th, on a bill with Nas and The Roots. And Questlove has confirmed something bigger sitting behind that: a Benny The Butcher feature on the Roots’ upcoming album, End Game, their first album in over a decade.
That’s not a guest verse for clout. That’s one of the most respected bands in hip-hop history choosing a Buffalo rapper who was making tapes in his mother’s basement a decade ago.
