DJ Soul and Okayplayer, Assorted Donuts: A Tribute to J Dilla mixtape cover
Mixed by DJ Soul with Okayplayer. Released March 2007. A tribute to J Dilla built from Donuts, with Dilla's own remix of The Notorious B.I.G.

On February 7, 2006, J Dilla’s 32nd birthday, Donuts arrived. Three days later, he was gone.

A year on, New York’s DJ Soul and Okayplayer answered with Assorted Donuts: A Tribute to J Dilla, released in March 2007. It started as DJ Soul remixing tracks from Donuts, then grew into something bigger when Talib Kweli handed him a freestyle over an unreleased Dilla beat and a Dilla remix of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Kick in the Door” surfaced. Okayplayer later described that remix as one of only two times Dilla’s work crossed paths with Biggie, and said it appeared exclusively on this tape.

The rest is a Dilla-blend party: Nas’s “Hope,” Jay-Z’s “Song Cry,” Jadakiss’s “Why,” Redman’s “The Saga Continues,” Big L’s “Put It On,” M.O.P.’s “Pounds Up,” and Mos Def’s “Miss Fat Booty,” reworked over Dilla’s production. Black Thought and Peedi Crakk trade a freestyle, so do Busta Rhymes, Rah Digga, and Young Zee, and the tape closes on Dilla’s own “Won’t Do.” DJ Soul’s Last.fm biography says it was nominated for a 2007 VH1/Vibe Mixtape of the Year award.
